GAY PEOPLE
CHRONICLE
1,500 turn out for Pride Day festival despite cold weather
by Dora Forbes
This year's Cleveland Pride '92 March and Festival, hampered by cold weather, drew a smaller number of people than last year, but was still considered a rousing success by the organizers.
Approximately, 600 people braved 50degree weather to march from East Ninth to West 28th and Detroit in à celebration of lesbian and gay pride, and to demand equal rights. There was no lavender line this year, because the city no longer paints special lines for fiscal reasons, but that did not stop the boisterous crowd that drew onlookers the whole route long.
A major force in this year's march were bisexuals, who for the first time were publicly acknowledged as part of Cleveland's lesbian and gay community. Also strongly represented were the many religious organizations in the community; Catholics, Jews, Unitarians, Christians, Lutherans, to name just some of the banners that were flying. U4ia and Mix entered fabulous floats, and what would Pride be, without the beautiful
drag queens who were equally well repre-
sented.
At the festival approximately 1,500
people showed up to laugh at the extremely
funny and entertaining Lea DeLaria who performed not once, but twice, for the crowd. Other popular attractions included the dunking booth, and the "butch tester" (ring the bell with a sledgehammer), both of which more than paid for themselves in both the revenue and fun they produced at the festival.
For the second year in a row, the cool temperatures kept the crowds to a minimum, but for Pride Committee members it was wonderful to see so much support on such a poor weather day.
Pride board president Kevin Beaney commented that attendance was slightly lower this year, making gate receipts too small to cover the entire debt. "We needed about 400 more people to show up to break even. I'm sure they would have if it hadn't been so cold." The Pride Committee is asking those community members who stayed home because of the cold to send in their $3.00 gate admission anyway to help offset the $1,200 deficit. Donations can be sent to the Pride Committee, P.O. Box 91031, Cleveland 44101.
The committee is also holding a Prom Dance and Fashion Show on August 21 at U4ia to pay its bills and get ready for next year.
Cleveland Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Pride, Inc., the sponsor of the festival, plans to release its financial information later in the year.
Columbus gay civil rights law now in effect
Stonewall Union President Ed Pfeiffer reports that as of 12:01 a.m. on July 9, it is
illegal to discriminate in private or public employment on the basis of sexual orientation in the City of Columbus.
The deadline to file petitions for a repeal referendum on the ordinance, enacted earlier by the city council, passed with the closing of the city clerk's office the day before. No petitions were filed.
